How to Have a Successful Telephone Job Interview

Because many companies now hire people to work from home, there is a lot of competition for those jobs. Instead of only a few people in a particular town applying for the job, people from all over the country apply for it too. These companies usually set certain criteria into which the best candidates must fall. If you want to land one of these jobs, you will have to prove that you are not only willing and eager to work from home, but that you also possess the correct skills.

The Resume

In addition, you will need to have a professional resume ready to show your potential employer. This resume should highlight past jobs, previous experience and educational background.

Companies will consider professionally written resumes containing the desired criteria ahead of the rest. Oftentimes, unprofessional looking resumes head straight to the trashcan before anyone even reads them.

Resumes sent via email should follow certain formatting guidelines. Bullet points should be removed and replaced with concise sentences. Refrain from highlighting sections of text. Instead, create new headings and leave a space between that heading and the information below. Your resume should be easy to read.

The Interview

If you are lucky enough to make it past the resume portion of the hiring process, you will need to complete a phone interview. This is your opportunity to show that you can remain calm in any situation. This is critical especially if you are applying for a job that requires you to interact with consumers. Your interviewer is likely to ask you how you would react in various situations. When preparing for the phone interview, try to imagine everything you may encounter in the job you are applying for. Decide how you would handle those situations. Make sure to remain calm, friendly and confident throughout the phone interview.

Helpful Tips & Tricks

  • Have a quiet place in which to conduct the interview. The interviewer is listening to make sure you will not be distracted easily while working.

  • Ensure you have some extra time available in case your employer should ask you to work an extra shift, as this will inevitably happen.

  • Prior to your interview, research the company website to ensure you are knowledgeable about their goals and what they stand for.

  • Remember to remain professional at all times. Imagine you are the one hiring a new employee and consider what you would look for in a potential candidate.
