Book Review: Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
One on of the forums that I visit regularly, the ladies list books that they read lately that they enjoyed enough to recommend. One of which was Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. Everyone who read it said that it was the best novel they had ever read. I went to the library, and of course it was out on loan. When I requested that I be put on the waiting list for it the librarian even commented on the books' popularity. It has been checked out at least once each month this year; and we live in a small town. I began reading Water for Elephants the day after I got it from the library and finished it that very same day. It was so good I just could not put it down. The book is about a man named Jacob who joined the circus after a tragedy in his family. Parts of the book are told by 90 year old Jacob while he is living in a nursing home. Other parts of the book are told from the view of the young Jacob while working for the circus. I became entranced by the stories of Rosie the elephant, Marlena the star of the equestrian act, and many others. I recommend this book to everyone, especially those who have ever wondered what it is like to live a life in the circus. Interspersed throughout the book are pictures from various circuses, taken many years ago. Sara Gruen wrote two other books as well, Riding Lessons and Flying Changes. If they are anything close to the caliber of Water for Elephants then I hope to gets my hands and eyes on them in the very near future.
